The Ghanaian Xylophone is a bar instrument suspended over gourds. Its characteristic buzzing sound comes from thin membranes (originally spider webs) drawn across wholes in the gourds.

Atenteben (Bamboo Flute)

The Atenteben, a bamboo flute, is a traditional Ghanaian instrument that was played mostly during funerals. In recent times, virtuosists made this flute a popular addition for contemporary and neotraditional ensembles.

The Gankogui or Double Bell is the backbone of a traditional drum ensemble. It must be played steadily and without error.

The Atoke, also called Banana Bell, serves the same purpose as the Gankogui, but is played with an iron rod.

The castenets are used as a background rythim, usually played by the dancers or singers. It is struck with an iron ring worn on the thumbs.

The Maracas or Axatse is a rattle made of a gourd, covered with a net of seeds. It produces a dry rattling, energetic sound and drives the music.

These shakers produce a rattling and clicking sound as a background rythm. They are a popular toy in West Africa. With one in each hand, they are a quite a challenge and a lot of fun to play.

These shakers can be worn by dancers and drummers. Every step or move produces a rattling sound.

The Dondo, also called Talking Drum, is played with a bent stick. While holding the drum under one arm, the sound can be changed by squeezing the ropes.
