Free Percussion Lesson: Kpanlogo of Greater Accra

In this drumming lesson you will learn the rhythm called "Kpanlogo of Greater Accra".
(To learn more about Kpanlogo music visit Kpanlogo history & background info)

This free lesson includes each part of a complete percussion ensemble. Learn how to play each percussion instrument with the help of below videos:

Kpanlogo Notations                                                                                               back to top

African drummers don't use notations. Africans learn by listening and know all rhythms by heart. Improvisations can be added to the rhythms and played at any tempo. Anyway, we tried to write down the basics and you'll surely find it useful!

Percussion Notations: Kpanlogo of Greater Accra

Open and print the page. It might help looking at it while listening to the videos.
Once all musicians master their parts, the notations will show you how to piece them together.
Keep the notations for later reference, unless you have a memory like an African ;-)

Bell (Atoke or Gankogui)                                                                                       back to top

Study the bell pattern first, it is the key for the whole rhythm. It must be played very accurately, as the whole ensemble follows it. Listen to the rhythm in the video while you are studying the notations.

Lead Drum                                                                                                                back to top

Study the notations first to understand the basic structure of the rhythm and practice it.

A master drummer plays the lead on a set of 4 Kpanlogo drums, using one for the basic rhythm and the other three for improvising. In the video, Mensah uses one single drum and keeps the improvising simple for you to recognize the rhythm and to follow.

When you are ready, play along with the video. You will notice that Mensah does not start on the first count of the bell.

1st Supporting Drum                                                                                           back to top

Watch the video and play along with Mensah. You will notice that he does not start on the first count of the bell.

If it's too fast, just listen to the rhythm, study the notations and practise a bit. Do that until you reach Mensah's tempo and can play along with him.

Don't stop when the video is over, just keep playing!
